It's been brought to my attention that there are a number of people in the LS who want a Joyeuse. Let me tell you a story...
In the beginning, there was a Typh. Typh was a RDM... Typh was a THF... Typh wasn't sure which job was going to get to 75 first. I made 70 THF and then skilled the crap out of my crossbow, in preparation for Maat. Then, I went hunting in Beadeaux for my Thief's Testimony. After some hours of fruitless farming, I went to wiki and looked a little harder at what I need to know... because... I had seen over 20 tests and not one of them was for THF... WTF?! Yeah... you can only STEAL a THF test... yeah, well, I'd been stealing every opportunity I had, to no avail. So, this meant acquiring as much +steal as possible and then coming back and hoping it was enough... or getting that last level on RDM (@69 at the time) and doing Maat, that way... yeah no... read about RDM Maat and I don't like my luck that much.
So... I picked up my PLD51 and leveled that to 70, to get Maat out of the way. I decided I want a Joyeuse, for the Maat fight... not because I felt like I had to have it... because I wanted it for the fight... and for PLD in general. You know what I did?
I went to SSG. I made my way down to Charybdis' lair and I waited... I spent some hours there before a RDM managed to spawn him... and then tried to solo him and died... twice. I called to my LS and acquired a THF tank and a BRD... I was there as RDM, so the healing was covered. The THF would only come if I let him lot on the sword. What am I gonna do? Say no and lose the opportunity altogether? Nevermind that my friend showed up at the same time and outtanked him and made him pretty much useless. He showed and lotted and won. I got over it real fast... I was new to the LS and it wouldn't have done me any good to start nuts so soon... however, the other people were rather pissed, thinking they had come down to help ME get a Joyeuse, knowing I had resolved to sit there until I got a Joyeuse... period. So... my sword walked away and I spent another 2 days watching that room and looking for Charybdis. Finally, someone came down to help me kill PHs and I saw Charybdis for the second time. People came and I got my sword... all was done. In all fairness, I shouldn't have had to spend 3 days sitting there to get it... but that's what it takes... determination and sacrifice. If you want a Joyeuse... decide you're going to get it and go get it.
Things to know:
I recommend a THF tank, although a good strong nin with an assload of evasion will also do the job. People tell me you don't need a brd, but I wouldn't want to do it without one. If you only have one healer, I recommend a RDM... for the stronger enfeebling and native Refresh.
Only the tank engages the squid... everyone else stays out of AOE range, with the BRD running in for Mambas.
I have seen various reports on his spawn window. The most consistent report is 8 hours after death. In my experience, he likes to wait considerably longer. I've seen reports of the window opening considerably earlier, but I've seen no evidence of it, myself.
You can't organize a Charybdis run... going in packing, hoping that he spawns, wastes too many people's time. You go and you kill PHs... and when he spawns, you have people come running. If you can't solo the little squids, you hopefully have a very good friend who will help you kill them.
If he spawns and people can't come to help kill him, then you watch someone else kill him and you get ToD.
Most importantly... make sure people know you don't plan to leave SSG until you have a Joyeuse... and be serious about it.
